Then hit m, and it will list which processes are taking up the most memory.

Are you swapping? Is the hard drive being accessed often as it sits there being slow? That is a sign you are using all you RAM and switching to swap memory, which is about 10,000 times slower than RAM.

It sounds like you are now running some process which is taking up a lot of RAM.

Again, check how your memory and processor are being allocated using the top command:

And see if you are using swap space, and if so, how much.
