Have never used Linux and have just bought an Acer Inspire One

I used Macs for years and then switched to PCs so am familiar with Windows. Am going travelling and was recommended to buy a Linux netbook as they apparently dont get viruses, boot up quickly and will be great for emailing and surfing net. However cant work out how to use it! Have managed to get on the web and access my hotmail - but cant work out how to get an instant messenger working - please advise in simple English - I dont speak techie - thanks! Wendy

Which distro are you using? Technically linux do get virus but from what I read there are only like 10 or so viruses for linux. If you have msn massager account then you can use a program called Emesene to talk to your other buddies on msn. Not sure how to install cause I don't know which linux distro you have. You should have a package manager, if you can find it look for Emesene. Please list which version of linux you are using that way people can list in more details on how to help you.

edit: Also before you go traveling get your wireless connection working properly. Just do a search on this forum, I've seen alot of posts about and by googling.

There are several Im clients you can use, You might try amsn if all you use is MSN,, if you use more than one network pidgin or kopete would be good choices.

Unless I am mistaken the Acer One comes with Linpus Lite> http://www.linpus.com/ which is based on fedora which has great documentation.

You should also post your questions to the Aspire One user forum. I'm sure they can help.

See if Pidgin answers your question.
There are linux versions for different messengers - Licq for ICQ, Kopete, etc.
There are also online versions made by the people that created the desktop software - ICQ has a web version called ICQ2GO.
IRC has Bitch-X, XChat and more.

Gentoo

I have just bought an Aspire One also, I thought the messenger service setup was quite easy. Just click the messenger icon and then it will ask you to set up your accounts. I setup my AIM and Yahoo accounts rather easily.

And yea it is Linpus Lite
