Has anyone here used LFS?

I'm trying to find out more information on linux from scratch or other such versions of Linux. I'm relatively new to linux but I'd like to have a much deeper understanding of this OS than I do now... I was wondering if anyone has already had prior experience to such a project and if they could help explain what I'm throwing myself into.
