Hardwire ethernet and wifi stopped working on Hp 3105m running ubuntu 10.04

I am fairly new to Linux. I would be very grateful for am help I could get. I have an HP 3501m laptop running both windoze 7 and ubuntu 10.04. I believee following an update I lost any net access( via hardwire and wifi) I have manually set up the connections with no success. How would I go about diagnosing and fixing this issue. I can provide lspci info and any other if need be. Thank you in advance.

You can bring each interface up and down with:
ifconfig eth0 up
or down
or look at which interfaces are configured:
ifconfig

network-manager is pretty much automatic

It's a little suspicious that both network interfaces went out. Kind of makes me wonder if it isn't something else, like a router.

You can try ping:

ping your_router_ip
ping google.com

Then you'll know if you have a connection at all. You can also check if the router is plugged in and working. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the rapid response. upon entering ifconfig ethO up (or down) I am given an (ethO : ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device) message. Pinging was to no avail as well. Any other ideas?

It looks like you're running: ifconfig ethO up <-- with O, as in the letter.

Please note that AwesomeMachine was saying to use eth0 <-- 0 (zero), as in the number.

You can also try running
Code:
 # ethtool eth0
While you're hardwired to make sure that the interface is seeing a detection. (See "Link Detected" field):

Code:
# ethtool eth0
Settings for eth0:
        Supported ports: [ TP ]
        Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                                100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
                                1000baseT/Full
        Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
        Advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                                100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
                                1000baseT/Full
        Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
