Hardware RAID1 ON HP PROLIANT ML110 G4?
Hi guys, after a few days of problems I will try to find my luck here with you..
well, I have a Hp Proliant ML110 G4 Server with 2 x 500GB SATA discs (same) where I want to install Centos 4.x Installation is not a problem if I install straight without and RAID, and also software RAID is working but.. I want Hardware RAID.. I have also a USB floppy to load drivers with.. I have tried with many different distributions, Centos 4.2 and 4.4(32-bit and 64-bit) Red Hat Linux Enterprise and SUSE, all with the same result. I have tried different drivers for the SATA RAID, written to a floppy with rawwrite. Both from HP website and from the cd that came with the machine. And it looks good until I have to choose the disks where I want to install, it shows 2 disks sda and sdb... It should show just 1 disk when I have created the array (RAID1 - mirroring) I have tried to choose one of the disks and also both disks but then when it is installed and the reboot the system halts with a blinking cursor up in the left corner, the system won't start.. Why I want to make hardware RAID work is because if one hdd should crash I would like to replace the disk and reboot the system without errors... If I use software raid1 I cannot mirror the /boot, or?? Are there any experts in this area that can help me install the RAID1 on a HP proliant ml110 G4? Or is it just not possible to install the hardware RAID1?? Please help.... Thnks! Tommy |
Hi, welcome to LQ!
A quick search here brought this (I think) very valuable link regarding your question. http://linux-ata.org/faq-sata-raid.html Read it, find out what hardware is actually in the box, and come back and ask again if the FAQ didn't answer your question. Cheers, Tink |
Read Tinkster's link. If you still think you have a hardware RAID controller, post the make and model of the controller and maybe someone can help.

"Can't be. No OS can see separate disks through hardware RAID."
I was trying to be kind. |
Yeah, I know. :)

Hi again..
I've been looking around and the only thing I can come up with is following Controller: Embedded 4 Disk SATA controller with SATA RAID 0/1 (from HP website) Any help?? |
Not to me. Insert a Linux live CD and run lspci.

Hey again.. well I've looking around and as far as I can see it it a "fake-raid" so I
did the software RAID1 and made RAID1 on SWAP , /boot and the rest of the harddrive, I thnink that will work okay for me also.. I hope... Next time when I buy a server I will have to check a little bit more =) But thanks to all of you! Really! |
