Hardware or Software?

Not even sure if this is a hardware or software problem. Have eliminated memory, hard drive, power supply and monitor as a potential source. Nothing is overheating and crashes can occur from a cold start or hours later. Same problems using the onboard video or a Nvidia GT430.

Symptom: Occasional system freezing with or without screen going to a colorful series of diagonal lines. Have tried fresh installations of Ubuntu 14.04LTS, 16.04LTS and Slackware 14.1. Verified hashes on all downloads.

Google Chrome will always crash Ubuntu immediately. Firefox will run most of the time. The default Ubuntu video player will always crash immediately. VLC video player always works.

Firefox will always crash Slackware immediately. SeaMonkey will run.

Possibilities:

1. Defective CPU. Any suggested test programs for functionality? I am not doing any kind of overclocking.

2. Defective Motherboard?

3. Linux incompatible motherboard? I am using ASROCK N68-GS64/USB3 FX.

4. Other????

I have toyed with the idea of installing Windows. I still have a copy of 98 but is there anything I could try first? I suppose it would eliminate options 1 and 2 but not 3 or 4.

:banghead:

With two distros and 3 versions of GNU/Linux, I don't see where loading another OS would be of any help.

It is probably less important which applications cause the crash, differences among distros only suggesting different memory or register mappings which trigger the fault.

You don't say if there is anything in the logs, but from the description my initial feeling is that it doesn't matter much.

I would still bet on memory as first likely cause. You say that you have eliminated memory, but you don't say how you elimintated it. So I'd revisit that and make sure that you have eliminated it with certainty. You also don't say how much memory you have so that number would be a comfort factor...

Next, motherboard... bad solder, socket, trace, component, who knows! But my own experience says that motherboard is the next suspect on the list. Have you tried poking around on the board (gently, with a non-conductive poking device) to see if there is any correlation with physical stresses. If there is, can you localize it?

Power supply is next, how did you eliminate that? Swap it out?

CPU... maybe, but if it boots at all is not overclocked, I tend to think it is OK - but my experience ends with 4 cores and a few years back, so current CPUs... don't have that feel yet. That said, check seating/socket, heat sink and grease, hot spots.

Ran memtest86 for about a day with 4 clean passes. 2G of DDR3.

The BIOS shows temps of about 35 C on the cpu.

Swapped out power supplies which are both about twice as big as necessary. Tried two different HDs one IDE and one SATA and checked both with badblocks.

I'll give the motherboard a good look soon.

That is a pretty good memory test, although there are still real world runtime differences.

I would suggest doing memtest again, and do the poking around on the motherboard, and the memory modules, while running memtest. I find that to be a test environment!

pan64 06-02-2016 05:02 AM

I bet on RAM too. Just in case if you can replace RAM or remove half of it.
You missed the possibility of defective GPU, try to use a(nother) graphic card.

beachboy2 06-02-2016 05:04 AM

skippy1729,

I had problems with Crucial memory on a custom-built desktop PC running W7.

It is the only occasion that I have ever had faulty RAM from Crucial and they replaced it without a quibble.

I ran memtest86 twice and no fault was found.

I put both original modules back in place, started up and the problem was still there.

I then used the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool and it diagnosed that one of the two modules was faulty within a few minutes.

Since the symptoms you describe are visual, and the system environment remains intact (although programs are crashing), this is probably a software problem, related to XWindows/XOrg, a video driver, configuration and so-forth.

The usual "question #1": when did these symptoms start, and what happened immediately before then?

Emerson 06-02-2016 07:46 AM

Can you pastebin full dmesg?

keefaz 06-02-2016 07:47 AM

Tried BIOS parameters reset?
What are the processor specs?
(seems compatible with processors having 95W TDP max)

skippy1729 06-02-2016 09:08 AM

Thanks for the interest. I'll try to answer all the points you've raised so far:

1. Problems started on day one of putting this box together.

2. Removed the GPU, same problem with the onboard video.

3. Processor is a quad core low power Athlon (45 watt).

4. CPU and memory were from a previous box that ran OK for 3 or 4 years.

5. Crashes do not always involve video. Occasional system freezes.

6. I'll post the output of dmesg in my next post. It's all Greek to me.

7. Will try removing the memory sticks one at a time.

8. Can you be more specific about what to try with the BIOS?
