hardware info

What software can I use in textmode to find information about the hardware on my computer, specially the video card? I can't seem to be able to get X working in Debian on a 486, 20 MB RAM, IBM Thinkpad. It keeps giving me the error 'no screens found'.

I tried using lspci but that gives me an error as well, altough lspci is installed.

did you try:

cat /proc/pci ?

Yes but I get a no such file or directory answer :(

When I type lspci I get
pcilib: Cannot open /proc/bus/pci
lspci: Cannot find any working access method

The directory /proc/bus/ is empty.
