Harddrive starts in the middle of the night.

I haven't seen this but my brother and my parents say that when the computer is left in linux overnight that around 4 in the morning the harddrive starts going I was just wondering if this is normal and what is it doing and is there anyway to make it stop? Thanks!

Do you have a cron job scheduled for that time?

Thats cron.daily running updating your locate database among other things it is perfectly normal and is a good thing to be happening you don't want to stop it in fact if you do not have your computer on all the time you may want to install anacron which will run the required scripts at a time when your computer is on.
