Hard drive purchase

Do I need to consider anything in particular as I buy a new hard drive?

My old one is corrupted. It's 40 Gb, and I think it's IDE.

I'm planning to install Fedora on it from scratch. Should I assume that it will figure out what the hard drive is when I begin to install from the CDs?

If the old one's IDE then you'll want the new one to be too. Double-check this.

Basically just buy the best you can for the money.

Things to look out for are buffer size and the spin speed. Maxtor do some decent drives with an 8Mb buffer and 7,200 rpm that are pretty fast. I'd go for one of them.
