Hard drive makes weird noise in Linux (and not in Windows)

I recently installed Mint Linux on my desktop. Weird thing... whenever I'm in Linux, my hard drive makes a funny noise when accessing, I can hear all the activity when it's accessing. If I reboot into Windows, it doesn't make the noise, only when I'm in Linux.

What could cause that? Does Linux have some different way of accessing the hard drive that would make it make noise? I'm worried that it's bad for my hdd too. Any ideas?

Really odd! The only thing which occurs to me is that the Linux partition going to be a different physical part of the disk.

Does the noise happen when you access files which are on your Windows partition?

Hi,

You could be paging to the swap. How much memory on the system? How much swap?

My swap is 600mb, and I have 4gb of memory.

Hi,

You could do a 'ps aux' and 'top' from the cli to see what going on with your linux.
