Fedora 4 is pretty old. Better try a recent version. Probably needed drivers are missing, as your machine seem very recent.

Well, sata may have a scsi id, else an old win wouldn't work, would it?
There are difficult motherboards, I got one 3 years ago, no linux would install.
A "portable bios" did the trick (Smart Boot Manager)
1)boot from floppy into cdrom with SmartBootManager
2)boot from cdrom into usb-key with SmartBootManager
3)boot from usb-key into the linux install-cdrom(dvd)
Or another combination of the above depending on distribution.
Of course this is quite crazy, but it worked!
No problems with newer distributions, exept ubuntu 7.10 live.
And from LQ: some having problems with some motherboards and Fedora 8.
Conclusive: Use newer distributions, today PCLinuxOS2007 is one of my favorits.
