GUI Package Management Problem
 

I need to remove some space from my hard drive so I went into the directory where up2date stores all the rpms and deleted them. But I forgot about the Add/Remove Applications GUI interface (package management) , so I went in there trying to remove things I didnt need (on the install I installed Everything), but it cannot find the RPMs because I deleted them and fails. Whats the best way to fix this? I want to get rid of a lot of things on that box because I need the disc space and all it is doing is acting as my router/firewall and serving a mailman list.

I would rather not reinstall with minimal since I am a newbie and it took a while to set up everything.

It might not be too late ,..i don't work a lot with rpm but if i were you i would try:
root@hostname:~# rpm --rebuilddb /pathdb/ /(rootdir) - or something like that.
I'm not a linux guru myself, though i love it, but i know there's an option in rpm , which lets ya rebuild the database from headers. I suggest you take a deep look into the man page of rpm , and i must say i have a feeling that this might be very useful , since it will help you avoid a total re-install...hehe believe you me , i know how frustrating can be.

I tried some command I found when researching this error before I posted my problem to rebulld the rpm database but it didnt help.

So I got somewhat anxious, bored and said, if I had to reinstall it would be a learning experience for me anyway, so here is what I am doing:

Uncheck a package and write down the name of the rpm it says is missing. Then in a command shell 'yum remove <name of packages>' Then I went back into add/remove gui interface and tried it again and it removed it, or thought it did. And I have now have more disc space.

Thanks for your reply. I had to do something, even though I posted this only today I was trying to google for it all week long.

Anyone think this is screwing my stuff up?
