I'm trying to install open SSL and Gimp is required to be installed.
I installed the libs (glib-1.2.10) and it looks like it installed without
errors when I go to install GTK (gtk+-1.2.10) it fails with
"Checking for X ...no"
"configure error"
"X libraries or include file not found"
Any suggestions on where I can get X libraries or what this "include" file
the message is listing?

you need to install libxfree86-devel

this contains the xinclude files

I keep getting file dependencies and it says it needs much more to complet install.
Is there one tarball that I can grag to get all the neccessary files or do Ihave to just plug away and fine each file and install?

First: Linux 9.2 is not a distribution . I'll assume that are running Mandrake.

In redhat you could have done up2date --resolvedeps={whateveryouwant}. But i do not know what is the command in Mandrake for it. In general only 2 distributions will properly resolve dependencies for you. Its Debian with apt-get and getoo with emerge.

if you're using mandrake then look into the urpmi command
it's similar to apt-get (i've never used emerge)

open a terminal and su to root
the type

urpmi.update -a

when it's finished
type
urpmi name-of-package

example
urpmi mplayer

the beauty of this command is that it will tell you what needs to be installed
and wil ask for the appropriate disks in turn and then will install it all
urpmi seems to be a standard component
i set up mandrake with a bare X/kde only 650MB-ish install
and do the rest with urpmi and the mandrake software manager
