GTK+ install problems

Hi

I am trying desperately to install GTK+ 2.2.1 but i am having problems. I have downloaded the TIFF, JPEG, and PNG packages, and i have successfully installed the TIFF package. However, the JPEG package doesn't have a "./configure" command, and this seems to be the problem as when i do "make" it says something like "Nothing to make for 'all'" and then doesn't work. The PNG package has similar problems, and without them GTK won't install. Help!

Tim

why are you bothering with this? just use the RPM's if you are on mandrake.

1. I don't know where to get the RPMs from
2. I don't have a fast internet download (56k modem)
3. That's the easy way out and I want to know how to do it

you refuse the "easy" way out but you're still on mandrake? point...?

it will definitely be on your distro cd's or alternatively http://fr2.rpmfind.net

If you can download the source then the rpms should be smaller, logically.
I had a hell of a time messing with those dependancies. It's partly why I'm trying to get 9.1 working, I think I messed up my 9.0 a bit.

Hey acid, can't we learn to love linux via mandrake instead of drowning with a harder distro?

How can you expect newbies to start using linux if you can't even install the damn thing? You know how many times i tried to install Debian on 2 PCs? 8 times in all....What do i do with Mandrake? Insert the CD and within an hour i am looking at the KDE desktop. Debian didn't even come with KDE! As for the "easy way", how is anyone to learn to compile and install that way by using RPMs? Small programs you find on the internet are not always RPM files....

yeah but gtk+2 is so so not a small program. it's a big thing with a lot of requirements which can be very difficult to install if you're not used to it.

rpms are also normally smaller than source packages, not larger, as a lot of written code can be reduced to highly optimized byte code.

Ok then can you possibly tell me where i might find GTK+ 2.2.1 as an RPM? The find RPM site only has 1.2 something or other.....

And finally, any ideas what this means:

xmms: error while loading shared libraries: libglib-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Whatever it is, it's stopping Mozilla, Xmms, Mandrake Control Center and more from working..

Thx

Tim.

I'm going in circles with GTK+.. rpm's give me too many failed dependencies! I end up going in circles with them too! I have managed to satisfy most of the failed deps with tarballs but have reached this and don't know how to get around it.. any idea anyone please?

checking for jpeg_simple_progression in -ljpeg... yes
checking for libpng12... no
checking for png_read_info in -lpng... no
configure: WARNING: *** PNG loader will not be built (PNG library not found) ***
configure: WARNING: *** PNG loader will not be built (PNG header file not found) ***
configure: error:
*** Checks for PNG loader failed. You can build without it by passing
*** --without-libpng to configure but many programs using GTK+ will
*** not work properly. The PNG loader is also needed if you are compiling
*** from CVS.

Please don't tell me to use an rpm .. it's more confusing for me to do so because I get swamped with failed deps. Thanks in advance.

ps: ih8linux: I know exactly how you feel we'll get there eventually hehe

seriously... just stick with rpm's. there will be deps as there are lots of pacakges to install, but like i think i already said here, just running "urpmi gtk+2" in mandrake should install everythign for you in one go.

Thanks yet again for your reply Chris.. I can't seem to find libpng12 rpm for mandrake 9... searched rpmfind and other sites still can't find the correct one for my distro and arch .. can only find libpng for earlier versions of mandrake.

Quick update.. found it (I think), installed it and still get the same error msg when trying to install GTK+ ..

Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:libpng3 ########################################### [100%]

That's the libpng isn't it? This is a nightmare
This is my GTK+ error

configure: error:
*** Checks for PNG loader failed. You can build without it by passing
*** --without-libpng to configure but many programs using GTK+ will
*** not work properly. The PNG loader is also needed if you are compiling
*** from CVS.

as for GTK+ can't find an rpm for it: gtk+-2.0.6

http://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2htm...&system=&arch=

they're all on there..... and if you're still intent on compiling the rest from source, then you'll also need...
