grub2 error on linux mint 16

hi people thats my first question here

i searched the foruns for solutions that but nothing solved my problem

error: file "/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod" not found,

___________________________________________________________________________

i built a new system on asus mb h97.. installed windows 7 and then linux mint 16 (17 crashed on instalation)

they were working great (only windows booting normally, linux had to be choosen from uefi bios) until i tried to setup grub2 to boot

have tried already every solution found on many foruns like using chroot, reinstall linux, reinstall grub2, swap to grub legacy, go back to MBR

boot OS are on ssd and i dont know how to disable secure boot on uefi

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

i have the following message on boot:

error: file "/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod" not found,
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue>

anyone ? thanks

Mint 16 is no longer supported and you will not be able to receive any updates or install software in the usual manner, Software Cetnter or apt-get. Mint 13 and 17 are still supported.

Are you using uefi for windows 7? You should not have to disable Secure Boot from what I have read but I don't use it so can't verify that. If you use uefi for one system, you need it for both and vice versa. Probably the best step to take is boot the Mint installation medium and go to the site below and download/run the bootinfoscript. Post the output, a results.txt file and someone should be able to help you.

You have grub installed to the master boot record of sda with windows on sda1 and Mint 16 on sda5. The grub.cfg file (grub menu) on sda5 does not have any menuentries??

You have windows code in the mbr of sdb and windows partitions on sdb2 and sdb3 and a Linux partition on sdb4 which does not appear to have the proper files. The grub.cfg and other files are on sdb4. The device sdb (3TB drive) has a GPT partition table, the 250GB does not. Do you have multiple installation of different windows versions or those data partitions for windows?

locked inside mint 16 usb

thank you yancek!

i divided ssd in 2

150 GB for windows 7 and 100 GB for linux

they were running all right until i tried to set up grub2

from this moment on i had that message on boot

error: file "/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod" not found,
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue>

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

to fix that i tried to resinstall linux many times with different partitions configuration even divided the linux ssd partition again (50GB) but never worked

all the other partitions like boot swap and home i did on hd

now i'm locked inside linux mint 16 usb boot..... i have two other empty usb (exFat) there i'm trying to burn mint 17 or windows 7 but they cannot be mount, linux cant read them anymore nor even format to another kind of file system

i also cant run unetbootin anymore because after installation is asking for extlinux, which i couldn't install because crashed

fuck i really screwed it! i have my wife's old macbook where i have unetbootin and downloading mint 17 by now

do i have any chance ?

should i use the macbook to burn windows 7 in the usb and fix the mbr , since i have the iso file ?

will i ever fix that ??

You have windows code in the master boot record of the 3TB drive, do you have a windows install on that drive? You have a Reserved partition there so I would think so. If that is the case, try setting this drive to first boot priority in the BIOS. If no windows is installed on that drive, if that is just a data partition it won't work.

If you are having problems with unetbootin, you should be able to use the dd command to put Mint 17 on the flash drive. The link below explains and gives an example of its use on Linux as well as Mac. Don't know about windows.
