GRUB problems...

Hi,

I have just reinstalled SuSE 8.2 after a stint with FreeBSD, and after installing from the first CD it then reboots as per usual. However, instead of continuing the installation of various tools from 2 other CD's, it enters a 'GRUB version 0.93' console, which Im lead to believe is a bootloader. Erm... what? I have just re-reinstalled it, and the problem reoccurs...

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

First question: what kind of bootloader did FreeBSD use?
Second question: When you re-installed SuSE, did you specifically elect to install Grub to the MBR?
SuSE will boot into a Grub menu, which shows you all bootable OS's found, from which you select one to boot (use the up and down arrow keys) and press enter. If you're getting a text-based console screen instead, a bit of google research (look for Zen and the Art of Using Grub) should yield the command to use to get grub to finish booting into SuSE. Apologies all around; I just don't remember it off hand.

bigrigdriver:
1 FreeBSD used LILO I think, but for about five minutes I was using Minix (don't ask). It used its own 'homemade' boot loader...
2 When I installed SuSE, I did set it to replace the MBR with 'generic code'... was that wrong? (I thought it was correct.).

masand:
I have SuSE 8.2 professional, which has 5 cd's and 2 dvds full of tools and programs. perhaps if you could spell a little better...?

Thanks for your help, its certainly appreciated.

hi there

what i was asking is that while installing suse do u require to boot again after installing from the 1st CD or don't u get the option of continuing from the 2nd cd after 1St Cd finished

redgrads

No you do not have that option, you have to reboot after the first disc. Anyways, you should be able to install from the DVD if it is anything like SuSE 9.1. (DVD side A is the same as the 5 SuSE discs and DVD side B is for 64 bit CPU's.)

You have to reboot to install from the the other CD's. And yes, with the DVD you don't have to, but I don't have a spare DVD reader lying around...

I read above that you said FreeBSD used Lilo....I doubt that....whenever I installed it, which I tried a couple of times with different versions, it never used Lilo, it used its own boot loader.

Also, maybe try install Lilo instead, it should allow you to choose during installation.
