Grub problem with Vista
 

Hi,
I have looked on most forums and tried alot of things people suggest so plz bare with me

I installed xubuntu and normal ubuntu onto my vista pc, dualbooting. Obviously I thought my ubuntu installed over the xubuntu but it didnt, it took up a new partition on the hdd
so when i tried to change the partition settings, i removed the xubuntu, and then when i went to restart i saw that ubuntu had been removed as well

I now also cant load up vista as i get a grub error.

i DONT have the vista install disk, and when i tried reinstalling xubuntu or ubuntu as i have their disks, it doesnt let me change how much of the partition to take up as it keeps the area they previously took up as one solid partition.

so i tried manual partitioning and managed to get it going until it says i have no /root thing defined and i followed every step available for sorting that but none worked

so i was back to trying to remove grub

any help

plz remember, i have NO vista install disk, only the linux ones.

Re-install the grub
 

I think by installing the grub again you can solve the problem
And if you can explain more about the problem, like what you are getting on the screen, perhaps we can give a solution.

well when i turn on, (as i have a dell) i get the dell screen and then it goes straight to grub which tells me it cannot load and returns 'error 22' as the reason
it shows after the dell screen: GRUB loading stage1.5

i tried to reinstall grub and even supergrub but neither worked as i can only do them in a live version of linux and have tried to reinstall from that too as well as with a boot up

nothing seems to be working as the only options i get when trying to reinstall any version of linux is either take over all the memory, or do a manual partition which i couldnt get to work very well as linux wanted to take up most of the space and then as i said, i couldnt get it to continue afterwards anyway

so my main goal is to remove grub or at least to get onto vista and then try and sort from there and reinstall ubuntu after that

To fix your mbr from the live ubuntu cd try this.

thankyou loads but it didnt work
it was almost 100% working, except it says it couldnt find package ms-sys whish is what i need to do it
maybe i unchecked the wrong box, but i tried everything
any idea on how to sort that out

i even tried:
sudo apt-get update
then tried the old:
sudo apt-get install ms-sys but it still came up with couldnt find package

when you do the manual partitioning in ubuntu after the screen comes up that showes your partitions. highlight the partition you want to put ubuntu on then click edit and another window should come up. change your mount point from /media/? to / and select ext3 as your partition type and continue on from there.

Looks like ms-sys has been pulled from the repos (and Debians) due to copyright concerns. Knoppix used to have something similar - mbrfix. I tested it a while back on a completely (MBR as well) zeroed disk and it worked as advertised.

Personally I'd go with the reinstall of a Linux including the loader. As per above, make sure you assign a partition to the root mountpoint (/). It will probably insist on swap as well, but I don't use the normal installer so I can't say for sure.
