grub problem
 

I installed linux on a second hard disk and then tried rebooting the system from that hard drive. The screen freezes and all I can see is GRUB prompt on the screen and can not enter any command. The partitions on my hard disks look like this

hda1 Win2000
hda2 (extended partition ) Win2000

hdb1 /boot 102 MB ext3
hdb2 / 8 GB
hdb3 /swap 1020 MB ext3

I installed grub on the first sector of the partition and not the MBR since I wanted dual boot. Changed the BIOS setup to boot from hard disk 1 (hdb) but the screen shows GRUB and I cant do anything. I read through the forum, inserted the first RH9 installation CD and started linux in rescue mode. That mounted /mnt/sysimage and then rebooted my system but still the same problem.

also my floppy drive is corrupted so I did not make a boot disketter. Is there any way I can boot RH9 without having to reinstall it ?

The Red Hat install CD will create a boot floppy. Run next door and borrow a working floppy drive and make yourself a boot floppy.

I am having the same problem, thinking maybe we can tag team this one. I have redhat 7.3 installed. I put grub onto the MBR. I do have two harddrives. I get the same thing we I boot up. The Bios does it's thing, then grub prints to the screen, and that is it. The only thing I can do is restart. I do have an bootup disk, and I have been using that to get it booted. I have been reading all over, and tried to rewrite the .conf file for Grub, and nothing. It just does the same thing. Could anyone help us out with this? Also, is this a redhat problem, or has anyone had problems with this with the other linux versions?

Have you been issuing grub-install after you change the config file? The config changes do not take effect until you do a grub-install.

I have not ran grub-install. I must have missed that. I am on a single boot system. The multiboot help seems to have more steps than I actually need. I was actually reading the grub manual at:

grub-install is only neccessary on the initial installation of grub i multi-boot several linux distros and also constantly change grub since i do a lot of kernel testing. i edit grub.conf add new kernels and reboot, no problem. thats one of it's benefits you don't have to run the installer everytime unlike lilo.

grym thanks a lot. But my initial problem is that I didnot install GRUB on master boot record since I didnt want to mess around with exisiting installation. But, I still havent been able to make GRUB load Linux from my second hard drive. I think I can load using a boot floppy but I want to be able to dual boot without using floppy all the time.

You have to do a little adjusting for grub but basically the setup would be the same.
