GRUB - my Ubuntu 9.1 installation will not boot
 

My Ubuntu 9.1 installation will not boot out of my multi-boot menuing system. The message that I get says that "the partition is not bootable".

I have found the "terminal window" but apparently the commands that work in other versions of linux do NOT work with GRUB v2 which is the version of GRUB that is being used in Ubuntu 9.1.

Should anyone know these commands, I would greatly appreciate a more or less thorough documentation of them.

My Ubuntu installation is on HD0 in the 2nd partition. The first partition on that drive is an 8 megabyte space created for and by the terabyteunlimited.com program called BootIt NG.

If there is anyone out there who has gotten this particular combination of programs to work together as they are supposed to be able to, I would much appreciate hearing from them.

Try here - the available documentation is sparse, displaying the unreadiness of the tool for general availability. I've also seen doco on the ubuntu site.

i'm afraid that I am not a programmer and the page you sent me to is full of information but it is way to cryptic for me - at least right now.

i have created an installation of Ubuntu 9.1 in a 50 gb partition at the "other end" (not the beginning) of HD1 (the 2nd hard drive)

it is the ONLY partition on that drive and i have no partitions on the first hard drive

i am trying to set up a machine with 6 operating systems (4 versions of windows and 2 versions of linux) and i have chosen to install ubuntu 9.1 32 bit first

It is apparently NOT ok to set up Ubuntu 9.1 in a partition at the end of the second drive. it will install but when i restart the machine, it won't boot into the OS. So, after reading about the reboot problem and seeing that the partition seemed to NOT be bootable, i needed to know more about GRUB.

All i need are the commands that need to be input - I certainly cannot decipher all of the information on that page. If you could point to that, I would sure appreciate it.

It was unclear to me if you'd tried the easy approach: Reinstall GRUB

I had some issues with a triple OS machine with multiple hard drives, although my Ubuntu partition was at the beginning of my second drive. Reinstalling GRUB did the trick.

Nope, you probably need to know more about Bootit NG. That message appears to be coming from it - it may not be able to handle grub2 (unlikely) or maybe you chose ext4 as the filesystem. Even ext3 with the larger inode - grub needs to be patched for that, maybe bootit too.
