Unhappy Grub keeps me from booting Windows

Hello Everyone. - I am a newbie just joined today. New also to Linux. I had Mandrake on my laptop together with WinXP. I deleted Mandrake. Want to install an easier version of Linux. However, now all I get is the Grub window and cannot get past it. I read about some of the answers here and I don't know how to edit the grub file. Any info would be very helpful. Windows I know front and back but I want to become as familiar with Linux. I would appreciate any and all help. Thank you
Ricmar

You have deleted the grub config file - so you can't edit it.
If you have another distro, just install it and it will re-install grub. Your problem vanishes.

If you don't want to re-install just yet, boot the XP CD, go to recovery console and run fixmbr.
Reboot (minus the CD), and XP will load as always.

if you delete mandrake...it you removed the booting files so grub in mbr tries to jump to its booting files and can't find any.

2) so rewrite your mbr with the xp bootloader...get your xp cd and it has a command fixmbr

I would say that you deleted part of the Grub when you deleted Mandrake. If you have your windows XP, insert the cd and when it tells you it found an operating system and if you want to repair hit the "r". Then at the prompt type FIXMBR and this should get your xp up and running. If you want the Grub to boot you will need to install another version of linux or install Grub on its own partition by using a grub floppy or Grub cd or using a live cd. For directions on this use a "Search" and you will find numerous articles on creating a grub boot that will go into more detail than I can here.
