GRUB hard disk error

I have a dual-boot Win XP/Red Hat. Sometimes when I boot up, the boot process stops at "GRUB Hard Disk Error", and goes no further. If I reboot at that point , I get to the GRUB OS choice screen, like I normally would. I thought there might be an issue with the way the BIOS checks the hardware. I have a KVM switch attached, and I don't know if this might be the issue. I'm not sure where to go with this one, so any insight is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

i had this same problem, except with different distros...my problem was actually the ribbon cable to the harddrive was just loose enough to cause a problem...you might wanna check the cable? they do get old, and less reliable. i put a new one in and never had the problem again.

check out your hd`s wire then check them at the BIOS ..if everything itīs ok and the problem persist...try changing your grub configuration...

try this one...

at the grub.conf you have to add this part
type exactly this:

title windows
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
rootnoverify (hd1 , 0)
chainloader +1
