grub-gfxpayload-lists 0.6 can it be removed safely

I have boot issues on a new hardware build in which about every third or fourth cold boot and less frequently in warm boots that Linux Mint 14 Mate has a slower boot process and which never shows boot login or desktop but gives all the sounds. IE system bios beep is heard and desktop login sound is heard but no visible login screen {black/blank screen}. If I type in username and password at this poing desktop loading music is played but screen still black/blank. To exit this I have to ctrl/alt/del <enter> to shut down and boot again after system shuts down.
I've looked at hardware as a possible cause and finally ended up with grub2 as most likely culprit. I cannot use command lind because of dementia but in Synaptic I found a file called [grub-gfxpayload-lists 0.6] which is stated as causing boot ptoblems. Can/May I remove this by unchecking the box and applying without te effort ruingin my ability to use the Mint 14 installation? Would hate to lose an install unnecessarily!!!
