GRUB error: unknown filesystem, grub rescue

Hi,

I'm trying to repair my grub with a live cd.

sudo fdisk -l

returns:
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB

But sudo mount /dev/sda

returns:

can't find...

I understand I need to mount before I,-

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda

That drive may have a corrupt or deleted partition table, to fix use Test Disk found here; http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk , and on the System Rescue Disk here too; http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page, I think that tool is also on the GParted (gnome partition editor) found here; http://gparted.sourceforge.net/index.php , so good luck fixing it.

Thanks.

I have dl Testdisk 6.X but it has appeared as a dir. How do I convert it to an iso to burn to disk?

I may be wrong but don't you have to tell mount which partition you want to mount, so you would want to type "mount /dev/sda1" rather than "mount /dev/sda"?

That Test Disk as a folder may be a compressed or zipped files, so either right click that and select the right application to un-compress it, or go back to download the correct iso file format. I have only done that in Windows, so if you are doing this in Linux, it may involve more steps.
