Grub Error 22

Hi,

I am trying to boot up linux on a SATA drive. The SATA drive already had some other linux. I 'fdisk' the SATA drive and cleared all partitions. Now tried to CD boot with linux, it copied over to the SATA drive, however, when i tried to boot from harddrive, it gave me a GRUB Error 22. Why does this happen ? Shouldnt the linux have created its own partition ?

Thanks
Guest.

Grub Error 22 : No such partition
This error is returned if a partition is requested in the device
part of a device- or full file name which isn't on the selected
disk.

There's the problem. You are supposed to install from the CD, and in the process of installing you create/format the partition and install the OS. Copying the contents of the CD to the drive doesn't install the OS.

Thanks for the response. I put in wrong words :-)
I booted from the CD, the bootloader/OS took care of putting it in the HDD. Now on trying to boot directly from HDD, i get this error.

Seems during the first boot, the HDD was not even recognized. I am using a SATA HDD and apparently my OS only understands ATA. Do these make a difference ?

Possible but unlikely with a current distro. What distro and version you trying to install (e.g Ubuntu 9.10 or Fedora 12, or ...) ?.
