grub error 21!

hi everybody ,
I know this is posted everywhere, but once more
so I decided to install ubuntu 8.10 over my xp and the problem is I never read about this , thats why I'm in a deeper shit...
it gave me grub error 21 since first boot and is still, I'm connected through a live cd that runs directly so I'ts the only way to get a pc to living ;] . I dont know what to do I read alot in past few hours but nothing really helpful, because everybody is still keeping xp and I don't want to.. I have the only SATA HD and I suppose it doesn't get recognised by grub, if I just could get to grub's command line...
any help?

Just try to give a general idea of how grub works:

Grub has 2 stages/parts. Stage 1 is stored on MBR of your HDD (usually). Stage 2 has larger files and cannot fit onto MBR, so it's stored on a HDD partition (usually in /boot/grub).

When computer boot from your HDD, it first reads the grub stage1 info on your MBR, which will point to the location of stage2 grub image.

Grub Error 21 means stage1 is pointing to a incorrect location of stage2. And the boot will fail.

I don't know the detail steps of setting up grub, but they are available out there. Here are some links I can suggest:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=62717
http://www.sorgonet.com/linux/grubrestore/

Note: I wrote this purely by memory from few years ago. Things could have changed, or my memory could have failed. Grub gurus out there, please correct if I am wrong.

Regards,
di

It would be difficult for anyone to give you specific information without knowing what your partition setup is. Use your Live CD and run the command from a terminal window: sudo fdisk -l (lower case Letter L) and post the output here.
