Talking Grub error 21

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
I was on windows XP last night and was wanting to dimonstrate my new head phones to a friend and I clicked on the music file in my documents and a folder came up with a title of one of my old email address that I don't use anymore, when I clicked on it everything froze. I then had restart via hard boot and when the screen come back on it was black with the error code GRUB.....error 21.
I had recently tried loading Ubuntu 7.0 on a seperate drive and found it didn't have ATI drivers so my screen shut down when desktop loaded. I sence ordered a disk with Ubuntu 8.0 on it tried loading it and it would get to the desk top and I would see the pretty pheonix and then the keyboard and DVD-RW quit qorking so it couldn't finish loading. I then took the HDD out of my PC and took it to my instructor at ITT and had him load it for me sence he likes to play with linux. So, when all this happened I had no Linux anywhere near my system so I really don't know what happened with this error 21 code. I spent the next 2 hours reloading windows XP on the larger partition of my main hard drive and that's another story for another time but at least now I have more room.
If someone can offer usefull tips to this Linux virgin I would appreciate it.

So are you getting the Grub error before you see the Grub menu, or after you get the Grub menu and select an OS? I assume it's the former case. If you want help troubleshooting, how about booting your Live CD, open a terminal (applications > accessories > terminal) and first posting:
Code:
sudo fdisk -lu
And we can work from there.

It's difficult to come up with a solution to your problem with the information you have given. You indicate you tried to install Ubuntu 7.0 and 8.0 on a separate drive and were unsuccessful. What's the timeline? Were you able to boot xp after either installation attempt? I'm assuming you had both drives in the computer at the time? I expect that what happened is the default installation of Grub (to mbr of first drive) occurred so that you have the initial stage of Grub looking for the rest of the bootloader which is in the drive you removed.

Grub Error 21: Selected disk does not exist
This error is returned if the device part of a device- or full file name refers to a disk or BIOS device that is not present or not recognized by the BIOS in the system.

Post the output of the command suggested by CJS.

The error is showing because you had the drive removed at the time.
