The only thing what I think U can do is let it go ur Linux Distro and Fix ur MBR by inserting Windows XP CD and Repair console and going to dos prompt like Command Line and issue "Fixmbr" "fixboot" (without quotes). these command will re-write ur MBR (Master Boot Record) and will allow u to enter in winXP. I hope this solves ur problem if u have installed Grub in MBR.

hello katabat,

Its not clear to me which distro you are using. if u r using RedHat Enterprise Linux then this is the procedure:
1)Boot using 1st cd.
2)at the prompt type "linux resue" and press enter.
3)then it will display a option after loading all the stuff as "your system is mounted on /mnt/sysimage".
4)ok to everything when a prompt type in "chroot /mnt/sysimage".
5)after that type a command "grub-install /dev/hd(a,b,c...)". /dev/hd(a,b...)means which device u are using it can be any alphabet after hd().
6)It will take some time, when over enter "exit" and press enter.

If all goes right then you will have ur grub loaded. I dont know it will work with ur distro but grub is all the same for all types..
If it works let me know

EDIT: the information that pinakighosh.rhce posted looks like it should be helpful, but good luck is all i'll say (see below)

I've had this happen pretty recently too, using Kubuntu. The not really quick, but sure-fire solution that i came up with was to re-install Linux, but not changing the partition tables, just putting it right over where it used to be.

I tried to repair Grub, but got no-where and gave up.

This actually happened to me several times in the span of two weeks. One time, directly after reinstalling, i didn't boot into Kubuntu, but went into windoze to check out some things, and then when i rebooted to do Linux stuff, i got the error. Another time, i physically removed my HDD, switched with another to tweak some settings, and switched back. When i booted after the switch, i got the error. So, while pulling my hair our, reinstalled linux, booted into windows, downloaded Mandriva, and installed that.

Needless to say, i was not very impressed with the frequent problems i had with Kubuntu. But things with Mandriva have been great so far

thanks, but I have another problem

Thanks for all the help guys. I spent a whole night fixing problems with Kubuntu and then it got really slow at opening differnet windows when i simply use the computer. we managed to fix that by taking out some stuff i didn't use. everything got perfect. the next day, when i turned it on again,.... same thing: GRUB error 16 and no possibility to write any command.

so I booted with the live CD into the hard drive (wich is where i am at right now..) i would like to burn a cd with music and pictures in case the computer becomes a wreck....

CAN I TAKE THE LIVE CD OUT ??

Dear Friend,
The position is still not worse. If u have XP still in ur system and unable to access then u can do the following.

1) Insert WinXP CD and boot from it and Press R when
it detects and asks u to install new or Repair.
2) Type which installation u want to repair (when u
enter a console (a DOS like Prompt) it is
generally C:\Winodws (Type 1)
3) Enter ur Administrator Password
4) Type Fixmbr Command
5) Then type Exit (it should reboot the system)
6) Remove ur CD and don't let it boot from WinXP CD
(Normal Boot)

Please tell us what happened
There is no need to re-install things.
(This will work only if u have ur WinXP still in ur sys)

Exclamation Another Grub 16 error

I'm having the same problem as Catabat, but I can't seem to access the recovery console on the windows recovery CD. When running ubuntu live from the disc I can't access the partition where windows xp is. If you could post a more detailed way of getting into the recovery console that would be much appreciated. Additionally, the windows xp recovery disc I have came with the xp already installed on the harddrive and all I have is the factory-disc that works with all windows xp(s) regardless of registration key, I believe.
