grub detecting drive

In grub, i'm trying to set it up by

root (hd0,0)

setup (hd0)

I keep getting "Error 21: Selected disk does not exist".

How do I find out what grub thinks exists?

If you have a live cd, as root in 'terminal' or 'konsole' type grub and hit enter. When the grub prompt comes up type your above and it will setup grub on the first partition of the first drive. You can also do the same from an installed linux program that is booted.

Here is a little reading material from our tutorials that may help you more.

Thanks for the help. I did the tab trick and it didn't tab complete. I checked the link for help on grub and it led me to a missing device.map. Looking at /boot, i don't have anything in there...I'm actually using systemimager to make an image. If you're familiar with it, it copies the entire / tree. It looks like it excluded some stuff in /boot. I'll have to see if i can resync it back. Thanks for the help.
