grub.conf problem

I recompiled the kernel with 2.4.22 then i won't be able to boot, boot error, sth like kernel panic can't access root file system, can't access lable=/
i did the following thing after the recompilation
i copied the boot file in /usr/src/linux-2.4.22/arch/i386/boot/bzImage to be /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-mvw
copied the /usr/src/linux-2.4.22/System.map to be /boot/System.map-2.4.22-mvw
recreated the symbolic links :
ln -s System.map-2.4.22-mvw System.map
ln -s vmlinuz-2.4.22-mvw vmlinuz
then in /boot i did
mkinitrd initrd-2.4.22.img 2.4.22
then edited the grub.conf to be:

default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Red Hat Linux (2.4.18-14)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.18-14 ro root=LABEL=/
initrd /initrd-2.4.18-14.img
title Red Hat Linux (2.4.22)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinux-2.4.22-mvw ro root=LABEL=/
initrd /initrd-2.4.22.img

after i selected to boot from 2.4.22 kernel, the system won't boot.......kernel panic...
what could went wrong?

Hey,

I have the same problem but i have been able to boot change the following to grub.conf

root=LABEL=/

root=/dev/hda2 (2 being the / partition) I don't see why I can't just leave it as LABEL=/ ???

it boots but everything fails on boot

It says its mounting / as readonly

Anyway its givin me the darn sh*ts.... Can't be that hard...??

Why can't we do this ?
