GRUB commands during install (kernels?)

Neither google or the "View similar threads" option have solved it, so here goes:

I have a machine which used to have XP and RH9, and worked fine. Anyway, I decided to upgrade to FC3 as follows. I downloaded the iso files and burned them onto 4 cds.

I then deleted the RH9 that was installed, but left the partition intact (uder the advice of a 'friend'), inserted disc 1 and rebooted. Up came a screen asking with a grub prompt. Where do I go next? The boot command tells me that the 'kernel must be booted before loading'. Neither me nor the aforementioned 'expert' have any idea where the 'kernel' is, and none of the other commands seem to suggest much.

Also, I cant use XP anymore as the screen which offers the choice of OS no longer appears during start up.

If this is an FAQ I apologise in advance, but I have searched that many google pages I think I will sat in an unusually tight long sleeved jacket rocking in a corner and muttering soon.

Welcome to LQ.

Take a look at your BIOS settings and make sure that it is set to boot from cd first.

Yeah, the bios settings go to my CD drive first. Even with the XP CD in I still get the grub> prompt when I start up. I might go down the delete EVERYTHING including existing partitions and start again, so if anyone has a foolproof "how to" on that I would be grateful.......
