GRUB but no XP (dual boot)

I loaded GRUB, thanks to the help of david_ross. But now, I dont have Windows on GRUB, how do I get into GRUB and tell it that I have Windows XP Pro as well?

First find out where your XP boot sector is by doing:

fdisk -l

You will see something like this:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 2367 19012896 7 HPFS/NTFS

Okay so in my case the boot loader for XP is on the first drive and first sector. The entry in my /boot/grub/grub.conf looks like this:

title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

rootnoverify (hd0,0) means that the boot sector for XP is on the first drive(hd0) and first sector(0). The chainloder +1 simply passes off the booting process to the Windows XP bootloader.

Hope this helps.

I'm not an expert. But I think you forgot to type in a "Label" for the Window XP, when you set it up. If you didn't type in a label it won't show up in your pick list. You should be able to redo the set up or you can edit the text file for this list. I'm not at a place to find this infor at the moment. I use GRUB with Windows XP and Redhat 8 all the time with no problems.

GRUB's numbeing system for devices start with 0, and not 1. This is one of the most common mistakes made by new GRUB users.

Grub does not use the 'label' ummm....label. Lilo does. 'title' is the lilo equivalent to 'label' in grub.

When you first install Red Hat going through all the GUI screens. The Boot Loader Configuration screen for GRUB refers to each item to be displayed on boot up as a "Label" along with it's device such as /dev/hda2. Should have made sure at least two items were listed one for Windows and one for Linux. Not sure what the text file generated actually says.
