Thanks fbobraga. I did just that and came up with: No default or UI configuration directive found. Going back a post or two I "installed" Ubuntu 8.10 and eventually got as far as the desktop. Tried to open Appearances, Systems etc but nothing would respond to single, double or right clicking.

If you are not getting any response when clicking (single-click) the Applications, Places or System tab then it probably won't work. If you still have the original 256MB of RAM, that could be the problem? You can find out how much RAM you have if you don't know by opening a terminal and typing: free -m. This gives you the total RAM, used and available in megabytes. The link below shows minimum system requirements for Ubuntu 8.10, 256MB RAM is the minimum.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseNotes

Using the windows boot disk won't help you if you don't have a windows installation disk to install windows. If you still get the Grub error with the windows boot disk, it's still trying to boot from the hard drive.

Another point...when using older hardware with low ram, slow CPU's..do not install or use desktop environments such as Gnome or Kde. Familiarize yourself with window managers that are very light on using resources such as Openbox, Fluxbox, IceWM, JWM, PekWM, and there are many more to choose from. Look for Distros that have installable LiveCD's prepared with these types of WM's already configured and ready to go. Setting them up from scratch for a newbie is to much of a chore, so find LiveCD's that already have them setup right out of the box. Here are a few to investigate:

Absolute linux

Salix OS (Fluxbox)

VectorLinux 6.0 Light Family

Porteus

PCLinuxOS

AntiX

Crunchbang

ArchBang (Lightweight but a little difficult for newbies to maintain)

GRML (Fluxbox)

Puppy Linux (excellent for newbs)

Thanks to everyone for your help. You have all been very patient with me and certainly made me think! I do enjoy a challenge and this has been an even greater one than building my own pc well into my 70s. Anyway 'nuff said. I have now got Puppy up and running with no problems regarding GRUB!!! So I'll sign off now and just reiterate my thanks. faith in Linux is gradually being restored - after all it was my ignorance in the first place.

I insist in http://crunchbanglinux.org/ (32 bits) - everything works out of the box, no initial configuration needed, besides being very light (I've installed it on an old laptop here, a Compaq Armada M700, with 256MB of RAM: it works very well)
