Grub 22 Error :(

Hello, I was trying to install Ubuntu onto an External HDD but it kinda went wrong.

I think the Installation installed onto my internal HDD and now i cannot boot up either Ubuntu or Vista...

I am using the Live CD at the moment.

I have tried many different ways to get my Vista back, I have tried my Reset to Factory settings but it doesn't work!

I have read another post about the same sort of thing but it never worked either...

In the other post they said to type Sudo fdisk -l
i done so and it came up with this list

Disk /dev/sda: 320.0 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x49fa46e0

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 1274 10233373+ 27 Unknown
/dev/sda2 * 1275 20073 151002967+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 20074 38913 151332300 7 HPFS/NTFS

I really just want to get Vista baaack

Thanks in advance

EDIT* I forgot to say, Vista has not been completely removed but i think the loader is damaged or something isn't working cus when i turn on my PC it says Grub Loading... ERROR 22 or 2 or 21

If you just want to get vista back and don't care about the linux side then boot with the vista install disc. Choose the "Repair Your Computer" option and then choose the console option after selecting your vista install. then run
Code:
bootrec.exe /fixmbr
and
Code:
bootrec.exe /fixboot
Then reboot and it will probably run a chkdsk then reboot, but after that you'll have the vista bootloader back. This will let you get Vista running again at least.

I don't have a Vista Disk as it is Pre-loaded on my PC. Is there anyway i can repair it i want to get Vista back and then work on getting Ubuntu on afterwards.

I have the Default Settings CD but that doesn't work it resets it but doesn't wipe out the Ubuntu loader...

Is there anyway for you to get to a windows recovery console with that disk, or by any other means? if so then those commands should still work. Otherwise your best bet may be to run an ubuntu live CD and install grub, but that would be a bit more complicated and I would rather avoid needing to do that if possible.

I have tried resetting it as it totally re-installs Vista but it comes up with the Grub Error 22 before it can finish the installation. As it needs to restart i don't know how to explain it... Basically, the Disk should wipe the entire HDD but doesn't as when it restarts it comes up with an error.

Ah, I think I see the problem. When your computer starts to boot up, there should be a screen before you get to the grub error, with something like "hit del for options" or something. basically hit del or whatever key it says to go to bios options, or sometimes it's called setup. Then change your boot priority so that cd boots first, save changes and exit. Then you can use your cd, assuming it is bootable.

It is really hard to explain do you have any IM? Like MSN or something? If so, add me on Gripple@live.co.uk

Ok, When i turn on the PC i press F12 which gets me onto the bootup options i have done that bit and got done the factory reset, only problem is that when it restarts and the installation of the Vista begins it has the Grub Error. I think i need to get rid of the Ubuntu bit off my HDD. Also i only have 1 HDD which makes this whole process alot more complicated.

The output you posted earlier form "sudo fdisk" which is just your partition information, shows only a Recovery and two windows partitions. Since you indicated you tried to install Ubuntu to an external disk which you no longer have connected there is no way for Grub to boot. You have installed stage1 file of Grub to the mbr of your internal disk and all the other bootloader files are on the partition with Ubuntu on the external disk. If you completed the install of Ubuntu successfully you could connect it and see if you can boot.

If you just want to try to get vista back and don't have any Install or Recovery CD, I would suggest going to neosmart technologies website and download EasyBCD to modify your vista bootloader.

I have tried with NeoSmart Vista Recovery, it doesn't work for some reason it cannot see my Hard Drive. So, i think i am just going to have to wait for Windows 7, then i will re-install Ubuntu onto a Internel Hard Drive.

I know this question is slightly illegal but is there anyway i can download Windows Vista from the Internet, i have tried many torrents but i always run out of seeds...
