GRUB 18 error after adding a hard drive?

I'm playing around with an older PC. Have it dual booting with XP and Ubuntu. I pulled a hard drive out of a different XP box, and put it in the old dual-boot box. Now I am unable to boot. I get GRUB loading, please wait....., then I get error 18.

I guess this is something to do with the BIOS looking at the drive I just put in instead of the one the OS is on? I see in a WIKI something about booting from a GRUB floppy (I don't have a floppy, or a GRUB boot disk). I am not sure how to go about doing that.

I can boot to a live ubuntu CD, but do not know what to do from there. Partition Manager does not see any drives at all.

Anyone willing to help a noob out? In over my head (again!)

Thank You.

From your live Ubuntu CD issue this command to list your partitions:

fdisk -l

I suspect that you may have to install grub on the MBR of your recently added hard drive but I can't say for sure until I see your partition layout.

hmm, I can not seem to get anything from the command fdisk -l. With fdisk -1 I got what seems to be a list of commands, asking for partition names, which I can only guess at.

Can't seem to connect to internet on the live CD to try and paste results of command.

-l is "list", correct?

Thanks for trying to help me sort this.

The fdisk -l command needs to be run as root, so: sudo fdisk -l, then enter your user password and should get a result. Is there any OS on the new drive you installed?

I tried the sudo command. It did not prompt me for my password.

There is no OS on the new drive. It is NTFS. I wonder would it make a difference if I put it back in the XP box, booted up on the live CD, and formated it ext3?

Thanks for the help.

OK, I figured it out. I had to change the jumper. Apparently it was on master, not slave. I'm not sure why it ran fine in the other box, as it "should" have been slave there also. It never was a boot disk. It has been in the other PC for quite a while, and I can't remember if I had any issues when I installed it there.

Thanks for all your time in helping me out here.
