grub 17 error post debian install

Alright, I have 3 hdd's. An 80gb WD which is the primary master (winXP installed), a 40gb WD which is the primary slave to the master, and a 250gb Maxtor which is on a the Belkin Ultra ATA/133 PCI Card IDE . I have the Maxtor jumper set to master. I installed Debian (sarge) on the 40gb. The grub install took about 30minutes to finish but it did and Debian claimed the installation was complete, it was time to restart the system. Upon restart I got a nasty Grub error...

Grub loading stage 1.5
Grub loading please wait
error 17.

I have no idea what is wrong. Debian saw all three hard drives when it asked me which one to partition for linux. Grub, although it took forever to install, also completed installation.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated...

Hi!

You get this error if the partition you try to boot from exists but grub doesn't recognize the filesystem type. Check your
root (x,y)
in /etc/grub.conf to make sure that they point to a valid Linux partition.

Good luck!
Martin

P.S. root (hd0,0) means the first partition on the first disk
