growisofs question/problem

Hi guys, I've got a DVD burning script (through MythTV) that attempts the following command at the very end:
growisofs -Z /dev/dvd -dvd-video -V $(dvddir)

When using this script to burn to a brand new DVD-RW, it works perfectly. However, any subsequent attempt to burn something to this DVD-RW results in the following error:

"FATAL:/dev/dvd already carries isofs!"

Checking the man page for growisofs states:
"If the media already carries isofs and growisofs is invoked with -Z option non-interactively, e.g. through cron, it shall fail with "FATAL: /dev/dvd already carries isofs!"

So I guess that's my problem, since if I run this script manually from a command line, I don't have any problems. It's only when I run it via a background process, AND when it's an already used DVD-RW that it fails.

So... my question is, is there any way to get around this? I've done some searching and haven't found much. Surely I'm not the first person to run into this?? Is there another command/tool besides growisofs that I should try instead?

Thanks for any help!!

Can't you just omit this -Z option?

No, that doesn't seem to work. It demands either -Z or -M. (-M appends to an already existing image, I believe)

I suppose I could always just throw a line in there to have it format the disc first, either that or start using CD-R's... Still, I'm surprised this issue exists as DVD-RW's are fairly common.
