Graphics problems on Dell Inspiron 2200
I have the KUbuntu 5.4 distro installed on my Desktop and it runs perfectly fine but I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 2200 for school and I just can't seem to run Linux on it.
I've tried a few different distros but I keep having the same problem:
The installation will go fine, but after it restarts and goes thru Post-Install i get a black screen. It is still running but has display issues. I know it hasn't freezed because i can use a secondary monitor to logon and access everything but with only a 640 x 480 resolution.
My graphics driver is a Mobile Intel 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset.
Is there anyone out there that can help me figure this out, or recommend a distribution that should work on my machine?
Thanks!

When in the black screen press ctr + alt + f1
then, enter the command
vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf
then under the 'selection device' section write "no accel"
Im not to sure if it will work, but it has worked for me

I think that may actually work but i have a few follow up questions.
1) It tells me it is a read only file, and I don't know how to change the permissions. I tried chmod but it tells me that i'm denied from that operation.
2) I'm not very aware of vim in command line so i'm not sure what the commands are to save and exit
3) I've opened the xorg.conf file and gone to the selection device section
but where do i add the "no accel" tag?
Thanks for having the patience to respond, as this problem as made me come off as pretty useless when it comes to linux!

A Dell eh? Chances are it'll have a horrible Intel 828x5G graphics card, in which case, install the patch from http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html and that should solve the problem.

Max_power83, log in as the root user
Under the section where it looks like its your graphics card/ chipset settings add what I said before.
Then to save and quite type ':' to get into the options menu then type 'wq' <enter> to write the changes and quite.

Also setting option "Driver" to "vesa" helps a lot to work comfortably without any acceleration until you sort everything out.
