Question graphics problem-Intel 865G chip set. Trying to apply desktop special effects.U-10.04

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 and can't seem to get the desk top special effects to work.I'm new to Linux and have been reading a lot about this kind of problem. It said somewhere that alien converts rpm to deb. I installed alien through my terminal but didn't do any more than that with it.
I followed some directions off you tube for setting up my compiz. My mouse is an "x" off the tab page, and I now only have one workspace on the bottom of the page where I did have four. Any information would be helpful and greatly appreciated!
It's a GX270 dell optiplex,intel extreme graphs 2, intel 865G chip set.

Installing alien shouldn't be necessary, ubuntu has heaps of deb packages. You don't need to convert rpm packages to debs.

There are a lot of web pages where people say how to get this to work.

I think because you installed alien, you might have been following some instructions which weren't really specific to ubuntu. You should try some of the above webpages which are about getting it working on ubuntu, see how you go.

Try

Code:
glxinfo |grep -i "render"
If you get something like:

direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer

Then in xorg you can add
Code:
Option "Legacy3D" "true"
There are some other things as well. This is taken from the Linux Mint Fourms
