couple of days ago I asked about linux for my mom. I went with a PCLINUXOS. The livecd worked great just very slow with win98 installed underneath it. I wiped windows and for the most part went without a hitch.

My issue is that the font is very fuzzy. I swear that it was working better of the live disc than it is installed. Win98 looked ok. No problems reading anything.

PC is
AMD Duron 1200
256MB Ram
64 MB NVIDIA 2 MX 100/200

Her monitor is an old 14" junker.
I know I know I will take care of that but any other ideas??

I played with refresh rates

font sizes (I turned everything to bold 14 and pretty much made whole pc unusable)

Played with monitor settings.
Everything has been returned to default

One other thing

DYNAMIC TWAINVIEW IS DISABLED ON SCREEN 0
at least that is what i think it says =)

my mom now has an old crappy 17" monitor that is perfectly clear =)

Is here monitor an LCD or use a tube. Using the native resolution of an LCD monitor will make the text look better.
If you use KDE, then enable aliasing.

Just a bit more...

I'll guess that your mom's computer uses PC100 SDRAM RAM sticks, and that there are enough of them around in old machines to scrounge that you could get more of them and boost the system's performance.

While you were at it, see if you fall over a quicker Duron or Athlon CPU. Look at the motherboard model and google to see if it has a 200MHz or 266MHz FSB. What the others can't use can be useful indeed. All you'll need is a little thermal paste.
