graphical interface
 

I have just installed mandrake 10.0 on my laptop. I am completely new to linux OS. I do not know what to do after I provide login name & password. How can I start graphical user Interface?

startx

Type startx at a command prompt.

Just do a at the command prompt, but make sure you have installed x-windows first! Do , and if there are results, you have installed xwindows.

I am getting error when try to execute startx and getting following output:

Using authority file /home/user/.Xauthority
Writing authority file /home/user/.Xauthority
Using authority file /home/user/.Xauthority
Writing authority file /home/user/.Xauthority

execve failed for etc/X11/X (errno 2)
givingup

xinit: No such file or directory (error 2):Unabale to connect X server
xinit: No such process (error 3): server error

Furthermore I also executed command rpm -qa | grep XFree86 as suggested by whipermr5 and got following output:

XFree86-4.3mdk
XFree86-75dpi-fonts-4.3-29mdk
XFree86-Xfs-4.3-29mdk

Kindly help.

Unable to get into GUI
 

Have installed Man. Linux 10.1 and only get the login and password. Have tried above... startx as well as something called drakeconf as well as XFdrake all to no avail; it still boots into command prompt. Any other ideas?? Arg. i thought this would install fairly easily-- like they say -- it ain´t Windows.

i think its something like Xorg -config .... i had the same problem...after you do that, overwrite the old file with the newly created one, then type startx

Unable to access GUI at bootup

Try uninstalling and reinstalling XFree86

Sounds like you didn't tell it to install the GUI during the install. I had my old Mandrake to do that once. I re-installed from scratch and made sure to select the GUI. Worked fine after that.

-problem 1 of many
I'm using fluxbox as the xwindow manager and I try to set the background image using wmsetbg <file name> it sets but won't stay after I exit and restartx.

I got an error after running wmsetbg <filename> ....
wmsetbg warning: could not open domain file /home/colombo/GNUstep/Defaults/WindowMaker
wmsetbg warning: could not open domain file /home/colombo/GNUstep/Defaults/WindowMaker

Is there a certain place I need to store the image file?
Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated, Thanx:)

Woh first time on Linux and you use Fluxbox on Slackware? Nice. Can't help you though, sorry. I'm a Gnome freak :).

KDE here. Flux is fast but I never could get it to settle on me. Just not enough options I guess.

There are Flux users here though.

I got the background problem fixed by
1)finding the full path for the background image to use.
2)going into /usr/X11R6/share/fluxbox/styles folder. then editing the style I use at start up by entering at the end of the file
there is most likely a better way of accomplishing the same result but.... feels good when you get something to work... :mad: when you can't this... is fun

I had a similar problem with Mandrake 10.1. Immediately after installing I set up my URPMI and did --auto-select. Everything looked ok...untill i reboot the next day. Boot went fine, nvidia splash screen came up, then i get kicked back to the console. Root could startx, but users couldnt. Ho-hum. So I did urpmi xorg, installed all the packages, and everything was jes peachy. THere was probably an easier way to fix it, but this was fast, and heck, it worked so I can't complain!
