Please post the last lines of your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Thanks

mmmh, i seem to be more stupid than you guys thought i was... :-/

after the system tells me that the x server failed to start, i have to login. then, still on that login black screen, i get a command prompt that lloks like "user@user:~$".
´from there, i have tried to enter
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg => command not found
/var/log/Xorg.0.log => no such file on directory
/etc/X11/xorg.conf => no such file on directory

i appreciate your help.

i'm slowly getting better :-)

now i've managed to reconfigure the xserver-xorg. well, almost...
i have noticed that the pre-selected screen resolutions were not correct.

although my keyboard was perfectly detected, i can not enter the necessary "*" in the resolution selection list. in the login prompt, i can indeed enter this character, so it's definitely not the keyboard...

any idea anyone?
cheers

found it: it was the space bar (makes great sense, doesn't it?).

Perhaps you need to change the keyboard layout setting in your xorg.conf?

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg should get you going. sudo gedit filename to edit file e.g /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Know your monitor horiz and refresh rates,your mouse-usb or ps2. Vesa or nv driver should work until you get nvidia driver installed, as long as nforce chips are supported in kernel. There is ubuntu starter guide at ubuntu forum site with step by step guide for ubuntu install/config. Good luck.
