graphic problems after grub and before kernel module load

I have recentally installed gentoo on my machine and im still a linux noob. I still have a couple of things to work out. Mainly my usb sound card (extigy) and my usb mouse. But the first thing i want to get figured out is when my computer boots, after grub loads and i select my kernel any text that gets loaded is 'fuzzy' and unreadable untill my kernel loads the nvidia models. My question is, is there a line in /grub/menu.lst that i can add for some video settings until the kernel loads the nvidia module.

Yeah, but you have to have your kernel set up right for it. Assuming the kernel is configured for it, try the vga= option like so:

Code:
timeout 5
default 0

title  2.6.9 on 3Ware SATA RAID1
        root (hd0,0)
        kernel /2.6.9-3ware root=/dev/sda3 hda=ide-scsi vga=794
I think the "vga=794" is for 1280x1024... You should try to google for some other options if you need them.

well when i add vga=xxx it comes back and says it is an invalid vga mode, then displays of list i can choose from and it isnt vga=xxx. the list is like
0F00 80x25
0F00 80x30

etc.....

I found one that works but i cant figure out or find out how to put that option in my grub.conf

also my grub splash screen isnt loading
splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

For the vga=

Code:
             640x480   800x600   1024x768  1280x1024
8 bpp        769       771       773       775
16 bpp       785       788       791       794
32 bpp       786       789       792       795
I know linux will give you a list if you specify an "invalid" mode, but I don't think the list it gives it complete. Try some of these modes..

To help me solve your splash image problem, could you give me your /etc/fstab file, and tell me what "cat /proc/partitions" says as well as what "df -h" says?

Also I still am not having any luck with the original graphic problems. If only i could find which vga=xxx code is for 0f00 80x25

"vga=9" is supposed to be for 'standard' or 80x25.

As for your splash image, change

Quote:
splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
to

Quote:
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

While I realize that you would be happy with a low-res (80x25) mode, if you are willing to recompile your kernel, I know we can make those high-res modes work. They really are worth the trouble if you spend _any_ amount of time in console mode. Let me know if you feel up to it, and if you are, just post your /usr/src/linux/.config file, and we can get started.

well here is my kernel config file. i just recently recompiled it and added in my AMD and nVidia support under IDE so i could turn DMA on. I also noticed while poking around my proc family was under p4 when in fact it needed to be under athlon. (now my noobiness is really showing). anyhow after doing so my nvidia drivers wont load now. but anyway theres probably quite a few things wrong in my config file so dont laugh to hard but this was my first time compiling a kernel. my previous experience with linux is installing redhat and relying on kudzo to do the work. but so far i've gotten my usb wheel mouse and buttons to function properly and my usb extigy card to work so im not doing to bad i dont think

my .config file with some stuff edited out to save some room.

You need to enable:

Code:
CONFIG_FB_VESA=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y
And I think that will enable you to use the high-res console modes.
