GParted Live CD error with a new PC build
When booting to my GParted Live CD version; 0.3.6-7 on a Intel Core 2 duo based new system with a nvidia 9600 GT video card which is connected DVI to a 17 Dell LCD, it starts the loading process but then stops on this error; Fatal server error, no screens found, and fatal IO error 104 on X server. So is this an issue with needing the newer version of the GParted partitioning tool, or do I need to use my VGA adapter to connect the monitor by analog VGA, since my video card has only 2 DVI connections and no VGA ?

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/news.php Since you have a newer video card I think it would be good to try the newest version of GParted. Your version 0.3.6-7 may not support your video card. You could also try a Parted Magic live CD: http://partedmagic.com/ The current version of Parted Magic was released Feb 25, so that is up to date also. |
Well I did try the newer version of the GParted partition tool,(0.4.3-2) to re-size and change my internal SATA hard drive, which did boot to and it did complete the re-partitioning process fine. But after a reboot into the Windows Vista it did not load that boot loader, it just hung on a dark screen with the cursor. A boot to the Vista disc for a repair did not fully fix that issue, so I had to do full re-format and re-install. So is this due to the GParted tool not compatible with the Vista 64 bit type O/S ? I just made my windows C partition larger from 80 to 120 GB, and then created more partitions for future Linux installs, so 3 primary, and 1 extended partition with some logical volumes.

Well, you did not mention that you had Vista installed in your first post. This issue has been documented, and is in the GParted FAQ (question #9):
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/faq.php and here is a how to to fix it: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...ista-partition Vista has it's own partitioning tool you can use, which is safer. http://www.vistarewired.com/2007/02/...-windows-vista From what I have read though Vista's partition tool may limit the amount of free space you can create to something like 8 GB or so. |
Thanks for the helpful information, I need to read more on the Vista as it relates to partitions.
