Got a error message 'Killed' while installing Xubuntu 7.04

Hi.
First, I must say that don't speak English very well. If sometimes I write something strange or funny, it is because I am not able to say what I'd really like to.

I have a too old computer (Pentium 133MHz, memory: 80MB, HD: 8GB) running Win (95 and 2k) and was trying to install Linux to learn more about it. Ok, it's almost a miracle an old computer like this still working.

In my first try, I installed Ubuntu 5.10 but sometimes it was a bit slow. A friend told me to try Xubuntu because XFCE wasn't so heavy as GNome.

I downloaded an ISO (the alternative 7.04) and burned in a new CD. The text mode installation was running normal when suddenly, while the partitioner was loading (about 30%), the screen went black and many error messages 'Killed' started to appear in the bottom.

I tried all the options to install but nothing worked. I tested the CD for errors but it seems to be OK. So I decided to post a message here to ask for some help.

Has anybody seen or heard an error condition like this during an installation?
Thanks for any help.

Welcome to LQ!

Not sure what causes killed messages, it may be the OOM (out-of-memory) killer in action.
Another problem is your Pentium is an i586 class CPU, most modern distros require i686 (Pentium Pro at least).
You may have more luck with distros designed for older hardware, like Vector and DSL.

Thanks

Yes, it is really a too old machine and I was thinking about to buy a new one.
Any way, thanks for answering.

You could try using Slackware, as that's compiled for 486 and more recent, so a 586 would work. However, in my opinion it's not the easiest distribution to start with if you're new to Linux.

The killed messages are almost certainly because of limited memory.
Go have a look at DSL (Damn Small) - just the thing for a small machine.
