Google in Espana
 

This is not specifically a Linux question, but I found this to be very strange. I accidentally clicked on Google in Espana on Google.com, which made Google redirect to the spanish language Google on my Windows box. Then when I logged onto my Slackware box (which shares the same cable modem & router), it did the same thing! My question is, does Google remember your IP address on their end? I unplugged the router and modem, reset all the network IP's and it still redirected until I realized you have to click on 'Google in English' on all browsers affected (IE and Firefox on Windows, then Firefox on Slackware). Any thoughts?

The only thing I can think of is that it is the IP address if you are not sharing a firefox settings directory or something like that between the two set ups (any mechanism by which you might share cookies between the systems).

Slackware is definitely completely isolated from the Windows box except for the shared router. I was just a little concerned from a privacy standpoint, because you assume that if you dump your cookies and temp internet files you have 'cleaned the slate' so to speak. It makes you wonder what else Google 'remembers' besides your language settings.

Yes it can be the case that google remind your IP address if u have a static one so next time when u open it redirects u directly there for greater speed of ur searching. u should amazed that it remembers ur ip address. i work on cpanel for maintaining my college website and i can see last time who has logined into it which shows ipadress and the type of connection.

Are you using tor or some proxy with the slackware box, which might seem to Google like you have a Spanish IP? I know that when I use Google through tor it appears with different languages, which I always assumed was based on the IP address which Google sees.

nope no proxy. I just booted up my third computer (wireless laptop) and sure enough, it defaulted to google in espanol also. I would be interested to know if anyone else that has several computers sharing a router experience the same thing. It looks like Google remembered the IP address of my cable modem and remembered I accidentally clicked Google in Spanish.

Not real thrilled about that either. Im content with having the choice of letting Google put a cookie on my machine, but I dont like it storing my IP address and 'remembering' my activity. Seems very Big Brother to me.

Of course, if someone else tries this and cant replicate it, then perhaps it is something screwy with Google thinking my IP really is coming from a spanish speaking location, and me clicking Google in English is writing a cookie that is overriding it?
