Good Novice documentation
 

I'm extremely new to the Unix platform. I'm looking to find good documentation to get me started on this platform so I can perform general Administrative tasks and install and maintain software the same way I would on a Windows server. Can anyone recommend any good resources?

You have to let us know on which Linux distribution (name of Linux operation system you are using and what version) you are working on in order for us to guide you. Every distribution has its own way of maintaining and managing software.

Thanks so much for the quick replies. The basic commands will definitely be a big help. Right now I am looking for additional information on Fedora 14 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.5 (Tikanga).

You mention that you are using RHEL 5.5 which is think already is or about to get EOL soon, you better start thinking on upgrading it. If you are using it for testing / learning purpose then I would suggest going ahead with CentOS 6 or CentOS 7. CentOS is rebuild of Red Hat and just works the same way as that of Red Hat. The only difference is CentOS is free whereas Red Hat you have to pay for subscription and support. Here is the link to HowTos for CentOS:

Thank you T3RM1NVT0R. That is great advice! I have a client that is currently running RHEL 5.5. I understand in his environment upgrades are hard to come by due to internal politics. I have been attempting to find a flavor close to what he has that I can install and work with but I haven't had much luck so far. I've downloaded CentOS 6.6 from the downloads but the iso's I've pulled down all say "image file is invalid".

From where did you download the ISO? You can download CentOS from their website which is: http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/6/isos/x86_64/

Make sure that you compare the sha1sum after download, it should match. sha1sum values for the ISOs are here: http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/ce...er/020709.html

I downloaded the iso from http://iso.linuxquestions.org/downlo...4-bin-DVD1.iso. I'll try the location you suggested and see if I have the same results.
