Good loading a new server tip sheet
 

Hi guys. Does anyone have a link to a good "loading a new server" tweaks cheat sheet.
I'm sure there are some common tweaks everyone does after doing a basic server install, just wondering if there is a good list of them out there already. I tried googling lists on my own, but due to my limited knowledge, not really sure which ones are good or more inclusive than the others.

I'd say it depends on what you are using the server for...
You probably want to setup iptables to only allow the ports you require and drop cxns on the rest.
You may want to change the default passwd settings in /etc/login.defs.

Thanks Chris. This server in particular will just be used for internal FTP'ing and rsync'ing of files for backups most likely. Nothing on the public internet or anything "important" like that.

You could probably do worse than to look at 'the Perfect Server' series* and see if there is anything there that seems appropriate.

Here, for example, is the Centos page, and, although Centos might not be your particular flavour of choice, there are versions for most popular server distros.

* I'm not going to argue the Perfect Server series is actually perfect; that would be setting the bar a bit high, but I'd certainly go for 'quite easily better than nothing' if there is an appropriate one for you.
