vi is ubiquitous ... most (if not all) un*x, linux and other *ix* machines
have it installed; knowing it (preferably well) just puts you on the safe
side. Sure, if you don't know it and have elevated privileges on the boxes
you can install other editors ... learning vi may be the more sensible
approach, though. I quite like vi these days.

I think the word 'best' is depends on the user preference. Best for someone, may be worst for the other...

For me, even in gui world, gVim still rocks...
