Gentoo and fluxbox is an excellent combination for slower machines, imho...fluxbox on just about anything is great for low memory machines, actually. (Don't want to sound like a fluxbox "salesman", but that's been my experience...Gentoo, FreeBSD, Slackware, OpenBSD, etc...they all run fast and smooth on low end machines with fluxbox as the wm).
