good distr audio generating / tweaking?

hi there,
I make music using several different mac os x software.
[renoise - max/msp (pd) - supercollider]
recently, i've been turned onto the powers of opensource and would like to explore the possibilities there.

is there a decidedly powerful - audio directed distribution of linux?
i'm willing to partition my hd and dedicate time to learning code, if there is any chance of expanding/exploring new sounds. i'm bored of commercial/conformist approaches to music.

i would appreciate any guidance...

no need to format your drive, 64 Studio runs from the cd. It's fully functional so you can check it out without making any changes to your hd. If you find you like it, there's an icon on the desktop to start the install process. Check it out here: http://64studio.com/screenshots. There are others like JAD. There is also a Ubuntu variant (Ubuntu Studio) also:

Not sure if any good, as I have never used it.

Check http://distrowatch.com/ for other distros.
